Do it yourself: How to Repair a Refrigerator door


If you're having problems with your refrigerator door, don’t worry repair cost is less expensive with minimum work. When you see condensation (water droplets) around the edge, or if your refrigerator is not staying as cold as it should, you may need a new seal for your refrigerator door. Leaking refrigerator door can increase your energy bill and stress your refrigerator, shortening its life.
Here are few tips to repair a refrigerator door seal.
  1. Buy new door seal- it’s easy to buy new door seal, you can order online. Remember to check model number of your refrigerator before placing an order.
  2. Check the size- before placing the order check the correct size of the door seal; it will save you from the trouble of doing the job twice if you happened to receive the wrong door seal.
  3. Check the screws- Lift the edges of the seal and check the screws underneath that are holding in the plastic liner and door seal.
  4. Loosen the screws- once you locate the screws loosen the screws that hold in the door seal, loosen only few screws at a time. Do not loosen all the screws at a time it will unnecessarily create more work for you.
  5. Remove the old door seal- after loosing the screws door seal will easily slide out from behind the plastic liner.
  6. Insert the new door seal- the best method to insert the new door seal is to start from the top corners and work your way around the door.
  7. Tighten the screws- once the new door seal is fixed tighten the screws, start with the 8 corner screws. Remember to check the alignment of the door while closed and also check whether the seal is even and straight.
  8. Apply powder- apply talcum powder to prevent sticking. Sprinkle some powder on the hinge side corners of the door seal; it helps to prevent the door seal from twisting as it meets the metal of the fridge.
  9. Close the door- close the door for an hour, this will softens the door seal and allows you to stretch it.
